Wireless Data Radio Application Notes

AN122 M7 and SCADA.  Raveon's M7 series of radios make ideal wireless modems for SCADA and telemetry systems.  This Application Brief describes the general requirements for a wireless SCADA modem and then provides the information needed to configure a FireLine modem to work in common SCADA applications.

Remote Management of Raveon Wireless Modems. (pdf)  Built into all FireLine and M7 series modems, is a set of unique remote management and diagnostic capabilities. With the most advanced modem management capabilities in its class,  FireLine and M7 users are able to remotely read network statistics, configuration, and operating conditions of any data radio modem in the system.

AN139 Using the M7 GX to send data in TDMA time Slots. (pdf)  The GX option adds an internal GPS in the RV-M7 radio.  With this option, a TDMA protocol is also available for use to send position information AND to send data between modems.  This application not describes how TDMA data in the RV-M7 series of radio works.

AN140 Expanding Radio Coverage with a Terminal Server (pdf)  There are many ways to increase the area of coverage in a radio communication system. AN140 describes how a Terminal Server may be used to facilitate this.

VHF/UHF/Microwave Radio Propagation: A Primer (pdf)  This paper provides insight into the nature of radio propagation. It begins with the basics of free space path loss calculations, and then considers the eff

TB115  Wireless Data Radio Usage of the FCC “MURS” Channels. (pdf)  In the fall of 2000 the FCC of the United States created a new license free VHF Citizen Band Radio Service. The FCC defines MURS as a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal or business activities of the general public.  This paper reviews the FCC regulations governing MURS, and highlights some of the advantages and drawbacks of using products designed for this service.

AN119  Wireless System Design Top-Level Issues (pdf)  Raveon specializes in designing wireless data communication products with a keen focus on system requirements and long-range operation. When developing a new wireless system, there are many technical issues to consider. This paper outlines the major issues Raveon evaluates to create a product fit for a particular market as well as an overview of how Raveon’s made its system decisions for its LandScape™ System of wireless products.

AN136 Updating Firmware (pdf)  AN136 describes with firmware in the RV-M7 may be updated using the Phillips Flash File Utility.

VHF/UHF/Microwave Radio Propagation: A Prime (pdf)  This paper provides insight into the nature of radio propagation. It begins with the basics of free space path loss calculations, and then considers the effects of refraction, diffraction and reflections on the path loss of Line of Sight (LOS) links. The nature of non-LOS radio links is then examined, and propagation effects other than path loss which are important in digital transmission are also described.
