Various technologies and strategies have been implemented for monitoring pipelines, from physically walking the lines to satellite surveillance. The most common technology for detecting pipeline problems like leakage is Computational Pipeline Monitoring or CPM. CPM takes information related to pressures, flows, and temperatures to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the product being transported. Once the estimation is completed, the results are compared to other field references to detect the presence of an anomaly or unexpected situation, which may be related to a leak.

Management of the gas pipeline system is a sophisticated 24-hour operation involving constant monitoring through supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Gas is transmitted at high pressure, around 60-80 bar, from central facilities and then at remotely located above ground installations where its pressure is reduced for regional distribution points and commercial customers.
